GCSE Music (Edexcel Specification)

Students taking GCSE Music should be competent on at least one instrument and be regularly involved in the extra-curricular music activities on offer. Students are assessed every half term on their performing ability through solo assessments, ensemble activities, concerts and recitals. They work towards completing two compositions for assessment through set tasks based on Areas of Study which include music of the Western Classical tradition, world music, music of the 20th Century and popular music. Students are encouraged to use a broad range of styles and techniques in their work. Listening to music is an integral part of all lessons and students are expected to broaden their knowledge of musical history through educated listening and analysis.

Homework is set each week and takes the form of performance practice, composition tasks and listening and appraising exercises.
